Supported Motorbike Tours

What is it all about

Discover Africa by motorbike has been set up to enable adventurous people to travel South Africa on a motorbike safely without exorbitant costs. Costs are kept low by using smaller bikes and working with you wherever possible to build a trip that suits your budget. You can join a tour as a single rider- or we can guide your already established group, either way you will have the best of the local knowledge and are guaranteed a trip you’ll never forget!
We offer 10 day trips for:
– The off-road rider who wants gravel and sand and as little tarmac as possible on one tour.
– Those who prefer a little more tarmac. This trip has more places to visit, beautiful passes over the South African mountains and things to do along the route.
– The extreme rider who expects heavy off-road riding.
– Bespoke trips for groups of friends, doing as you wish and visiting wherever you like!
These trips are explained on the supported motorbike trips page.

So what do we mean by supported motorbike trip?

You ride as a group on our motorbikes (125cc or 250cc) with a support 4×4 following you 10 minutes behind. The support truck carries extra fuel, spare parts, a first aid kit and a carrier to move a bike in case of breakdown that can’t be fixed on the go. The 4×4 will also carry your bags, making the off-road parts much easier as the bikes are lighter.
Your driver will be first aid trained, have local knowledge and will be there to offer support, fun and a story or two along the way.
Each tour lasts for 10 days and starts and finishes at African Overlanders (just outside of Cape Town). Airport pickups (R350) and transfers from Cape Town (R400) can be arranged.
Each trip begins with your arrival by 2pm on your first day. We go through the bikes, the route and any questions you may have. We will then head to the Palms (a lively local bar) for food, drinks and get to know each other a little. Content of trips varies from this point, details can be found within trip specific information.

Please contact us to ask any questions and to book your place on your chosen tour. Please be aware that a minimum of 5 people are needed for a trip to be run and a deposit of £500 per rider is required at the time of booking. This deposit will be refunded to you at the end of your trip, minus any damage that is incurred to the motorbike.
You must have paid the trip cost in full before the trip begins. If the tour doesn’t fill up and you’re unable to transfer to another tour then we will return the full amount of money minus the transfer costs.
We offer a 10% discount on the bike hire price for anyone who introduces a friend who also books on a trip with us. If you organise a tour for 6 people (including yourself), you will receive a 50% discount.

The cost

Each 10 day trip costs £600 per rider, plus a deposit of £500 against damage to the bike. The following is included in this price:
– Motorbike hire for the duration of your trip
-the support driver/mechanic
– Motorbike insurance (please note this does not cover the rider)
– Arranging the logistics of the trip.

You will have additional costs for fuel, accommodation and food. On the individual trip pages you can see an overview of the costs that we expect to pay each day/
Fuel is bought at stations and carried in the support vehicle for off-road sections of the journey.
Food is bought individually at restaurants, or from a small kitty if cooking and eating together as a group.
Accommodation is booked in advance. Costs will vary according to your choice of room (dorm/single/double room).

We offer a 10% discount on the bike hire price for anyone who introduces a friend who also books on a trip with us. If you organise a tour for 6 people (including yourself), you will receive a 50% discount.

Your responsibilities

– A minimum of 5 riders are required for each tour. You will be offered alternatives whenever possible if there are not enough riders for your chosen tour.
– You will incur additional costs along the way! We have tried to make this clear within the trip descriptions, please ask if you have specific questions about this.
– You will need the correct license for the bike you plan to ride prior to arrival.
– We would prefer you to have an international license (this can obtained from your local issuing authority).
– You will enjoy your adventure more if you have some experience riding a motorcycle before embarking on your tour.
– Personal insurance of any kind, including injury, is not included. It is strongly advised that you arrange suitable cover for your chosen trip prior to the start date, ensuring you are covered riding a motorbike on or off-road in South Africa.
– Protective clothing is not provided. You will need a well fitted helmet that is in good condition (we suggest with a chin guard) and appropriate clothing. No great speeds will be reached but you need to protect yourself.
– Your extra clothing must fit into a small bag, there is limited space in the 4×4. Each trip stops at least once with the opportunity for washing clothes.
– Please carry some cash with you, card facilities are not available in remote locations and are not welcomed for small purchases throughout South Africa.
– You will be riding at different elevations. Some warm clothes will be required as it can get cold.
– You will need sun block and moisturiser as you will burn and not even feel it in the wind.

That’s it!!!!
